Little Women
2024
A contemporary book design reimagining of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
Recognizing that this book is semi-autobiographical to Alcott’s own upbringing, I incorporated that element into the design to emphasize the story’s meta nature. Jo March mirrors Alcott’s passion for writing and her sharp wit, which is reflected in the plays performed within the book. I used a playwriting structure to highlight the book’s central paradox: the tension between fiction and reality. Additionally, I referenced Greta Gerwig’s 2019 screenplay adaptation whenever green pages appear, further showcasing the story’s layered and complex nature.
I also created an alternate version of the book by enlisting my good friend Polly Edwards to illustrate the dust cover, end pages, a two-page spread, and a page featuring four flowers symbolizing the March sisters.
THE MANUSCRIPT OF LOUISA MAY ALCOTT’S TEXT WAS SOURCED FROM THE PROJECT GUTENBERG WEBSITE.
GRETA GERWIG’S 2019 SCREENPLAY WAS ACCESSED VIA VARIETY.COM.
