I had the honor of redesigning Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women, for one of my classes this semester. I took this role very seriously, hiring my good friend Polly Edwards to illustrate the dust cover, end pages, one two page spread and one page with four flowers that represent the March sisters.

Understanding that this book is semi-autobiographical to Alcott’s own upbringing, I incorporated that aspect as a design choice to highlight the story’s meta nature. Jo March mirrors Alcott’s passion for writing and her sharp wit, reflected in the plays performed within the book itself. I used the playwriting structure to emphasize the paradox of the book: the tension between fiction and reality. Also, using Greta Gerwig’s 2019 screenplay adaptation whenever there are green pages to further show the complex nature of this story.

The manuscript of Louisa May Alcott’s text was sourced from the Project Gutenberg website.
